What is the difference between my Jag Number, PIN, User ID, and Password?

Jag Number - This is your student number with "J00" in front of it. It is what you use to log in to the PAWS system. If you do not know your Jag Number either email PAWS HELP (pawshelp@usouthal.edu) or call the Registrar's Office.

PIN - This is the secret Personal Identification Number that you use to log in to the PAWS system. If you have forgotten your PIN you can change it by going to the link below, clicking on "Enter Secure Area", typing in your Jag Number, and clicking the "Forgot PIN?" button. At this point you will be asked a challenge question, and then you will be allowed to set your PIN to any 6 digit number. If this does not work contact PAWS HELP (pawshelp@usouthal.edu).

User ID - This is your unique indentifier in the Jaguar1 email system. Think of it as your post office box. This is used to log in to your email on the Web Mail page. If you do not know your User ID go to the Account Setup page, enter your Jag Number & PIN, and click the "Submit Request" button.

Password - This is the secret password that you use to log in to your Jaguar1 email account on the Web Mail page. Think of it as the key to your post office box. If you do not know your Password go to the Account Setup page, enter your Jag Number & PIN, and click the "Submit Request" button.

My userid/password does not work.

When you run the Jaguar1 Email Account Setup page, it displays your userid (which is always the same) and resets only your password. It will change your password each time you submit the page. We have been through this many, many times with students and have yet to find an instance where the login/password did not work when the procedure was followed correctly (and login/password were typed correctly).

When there is a question about the userid/password the easiest thing to do is to reset the password. Try the Jaguar1 Email Account Setup Page again and print the results that it gives you.

    http://jaguar1.usouthal.edu/jagmail/jagmail_stusetup.htm

Once you have your new password, try logging in to the webmail interface:

    https://jaguar1.usouthal.edu/

Be especially careful to type your userid and the password exactly as it appears from the previous step. The random 5-digit password is difficult to type, even for experienced typists but they must be used to make it as difficult as possible for hackers to guess.

Once you've logged in, you can click on "Options", "Password" and change your password to something easier to remember. We strongly recommend that you use at least six characters, one of which is a number (something like "easy2c" or such). Avoid using simple names or dictionary words without adding a number or two, those are the first things that a hacker will try.

Can I use the Web Mail interface via an secure/encrypted connection?

TOP

How do I know if my Web Mail session is secure/encrypted?

If you use MS Internet Explorer click "File", "Properties" and then the "General" tab. Look for text similar to the following: "Connection: SSL 3.0, RC4 with 128 bit encryption (High); RSA with 1024 bit exchange". If the page is not encrypted, it will show "Connection: Not Encrypted"

For Netscape/Mozilla - click "View", "Page Info", click on the "Security" tab and look at the bottom half of the window for "Connection Encrypted: . . .". Otherwise, you'll probably see "Connection Not Encrypted".

Finally, most browsers will indicate the security status (secure/non secure) by displaying a padlock icon that is either locked (secure) or unlocked (non secure). The icon is usually located on the bottom right side of your browser window.

I am getting a lot of spam on a regular basis. Can I just get a new email account?

As a rule the University does not change email addresses due to excessive spam. Spam is an unfortunate fact of having an email address. There are ways to filter and remove spam and we provide instructions for doing so below.

How do I use USA's spam identification system to control spam?

The spam identification system conducts a series of tests on all incoming messages. If the message scores highly enough to be considered spam, the system prefaces the subject line of the message with a string like the following: [SPAM:**** Score:4.998] . The number of asterisks and score will vary, depending on the degree of confidence.

We recommend that you create a folder named "spam" (or some similar name to your liking) and create a rule to automatically file messages which contain "[SPAM:*" into this folder. You can then periodically scan this folder for valid messages; delete any you do not wish to maintain.

Since all spam filters will on occasion falsely classify valid messages as spam, we recommend that you not automatically delete messages that are identified as spam.

Here is an example of how to create a rule to move messages identified as spam into a separate folder.

    1. Login to Jaguar1 through Web Mail
    2. Create a folder called Spam
    3. Click the Options button at the top of the screen
    4. Click the Mail Filters button on the left
    5. Click the New button
    6. Enter a Filter Name
    7. Make sure the Status is Enabled
    8. Select the second radio button under "For Incoming Messages"
    9. Select 'begins with' in th efirst box to the right of Subject
    10. Type [SPAM:* in the second box
    11. Under "Apply Message Actions" check "File message to folder:" and select the newly created Spam folder
    12. Click the save button

I can read my mail messages but when I click the Compose, Reply, Forward or Help buttons nothing happens. What's the problem?

Our webmail program uses pop-up windows to compose email messages, reply/forward messages and display help menus. Your computer is probably running pop-up blocking software. Here are several solutions, in preferred order:

    1. Many pop-up blockers will allow you to bypass the block by holding down the CTRL (control) key while clicking on a link or icon. Try this when clicking on the compose or reply icons. If this solves your problem, you can simply continue to use this practice, or alternatively, look at the following suggestions to remove the block for Jaguar1.
    2. Most decent pop-up blockers allow you to maintain a list of sites that are allowed to use pop-up windows in their web applications. You need to discover what application is blocking pop-ups, find the option/settings/preferences menu and add 'jaguar1.usouthal.edu' to the allowed sites list.
    3. If your pop-up blocker doesn't allow you to specify allowed sites, then you'll want to either disable the pop-up blocker while you're using webmail, exit from it or uninstall it. At this point we recommend uninstalling it and finding a pop-up blocker that has more options. Several web browsers have options to block pop-up windows and maintain an allowed sites list. Current versions of Mozilla, Netscape, Mozilla Firebird and MS Internet Explorer XP SP2. (Prior to Service Pack 2, MS IE does not have a pop-up blocker.) Here is how to configure pop-up blocker options on the more common web browsers:
      1. MS Internet Explorer Service Pack 2 - To determine if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, open IE and click on the help menu, then click 'About Internet Explorer'. After 'Version:' you will see some numbers and the string 'sp2'. If you have SP2, click on 'Tools', Internet Options', click the 'Privacy' tab and check the box 'Block pop-ups'. Now click the 'Settings' button, type in 'jaguar1.usouthal.edu' for 'Address of Web site to allow:', click the 'Add' button. Click 'OK' until you exit all options menus.
      2. Mozilla or Netscape - Click the 'Edit' menu, 'Preferences...', expand the 'Privacy & Security' options, click 'Popup Windows', check the box 'Block unrequested popup windows', click the 'Allowed Sites...' button, type 'jaguar1.usouthal.edu' in the 'Allow popups from the following web sites:' box, click the 'Add' button and click 'OK' until you exit preferences.

Unfortunately there are dozens of pop-up blocking applications, so it isn't possible to give detailed instructions for all of them. Either you or whoever takes care of installing software on your computer has installed the program (perhaps unknowingly). Sometimes it is bundled into the software supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for connecting to their service. Some internet browsers have options that support pop-up blocking (Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, . . . though not pre-SP2 MS Internet Explorer).

Sometimes you can determine what pop-up blocking software is running by hovering your mouse cursor over each icon in your system tray (bottom right hand corner of your screen where the date/time is displayed). A small yellow balloon (tag or rectangular box) of text will tell you what program is represented by the icon. If one of these icons looks suspicious, you can RIGHT-click on it and view what options are available for that program.

If you were unsuccessful with steps 1 or 2, you can use third party software to read your Jaguar1 email (MS Outlook Express, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.) instead of using the webmail interface. Instructions for configuring these applications can be found here.

How do I forward my Jaguar1 email to another email account?

TOP

Will my email messages stay permanently on the server?

Messages in your Trash folder are deleted after 10 days, and are not recoverable. Except for this folder, there is no policy for aging or purging messages on the Jaguar1 system. However, it is our expectation that an aging policy will be required in the future. You will receive advance notification of any change in policy.
